Celebrating Thanksgiving in Washington, DC

Traveling to Washington, DC around Thanksgiving is the best time to see the capital city, mainly because the holiday magic starts to appear, and more American history is shown off. Instead of sitting around a holiday table, you could take one of the many Washington, DC bus tours and see some of the great things that are going on during Thanksgiving. The Turkey Trots

The Turkey Trots happen in Washington, DC and other surrounding cities. These runs take place on Thanksgiving and are fun to run in and watch. The money that is raised goes to “So Others Might Eat” charity foundation. Each year, participants dress up in turkey suits, which makes the event that much more fun.

The U.S Botanic Garden

The U.S. Botanic Garden is a popular Washington, DC sightseeing spot, especially during holidays. The botanical garden is filled with holiday decorations and flowers. There is also a popular model train on display. There is a large greenhouse to warm up in, which has more plants inside. This is an iconic holiday spot in Washington.

The National Zoo

Every year, the National Zoo has its ZooLights display. This year, the National Zoo has added some new pieces that are part of a light show with music — BrewLights.  You can also ride the Conservation Carousel. The ZooLights shows are every day from 5 pm to 9 pm, until Jan. 2.

National Museum of the American Indian

On Friday, November 25th, the National Museum of the American Indian will be celebrating Native American Heritage Day. There will be stories told using dance and music during the afternoon.

Black Squirrel Thanksgiving Dinner

If you want to have a Thanksgiving dinner, but do not want to have to make it yourself, you’re in luck, because the Black Squirrel is having their annual Thanksgiving dinner.  The dinner is held at the Libertine restaurant and the Adams Morgan Bar. The dinner is buffet-style and starts at 11:30 am. There are many seasonal beers on tap, and the bar stays open until 2 am. The buffet is reasonably priced at $10 a person and is full of American classics.

Thanksgiving is really the kick-off for the holiday season. While most people are getting ready for the black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, taking one of the DC bus tours will definitely get you in the holiday spirit.
