Vietnam Veterans Memorial – A Must See

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC is a national memorial with a surface of 2 acres (8,000 m²). The construction of the memorial has been a source of quite a few controversies, resulting in numerous alterations to the original design. This important memorial is comprised of three different parts — the Three Servicemen Memorial, the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, and the part known as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, which truly is the focal point of the entire memorial. The memorial was designed by Maya Lin – an American architect. The main part of the memorial was completed back in 1982. Located in the Constitution Gardens, the memorial is right next to the National Mall, just off to northeast from the Lincoln Memorial. The memorial is being maintained by the National Park Services.

The memorial is a busy place; it receives an estimated 3 million visitors every year and is one of the most popular tourist destinations not only in Washington, DC, but in the entire country as well. It was ranked top ten in the America’s Favorite Architectures and as a National Memorial, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The memorial is definitely a must-see site when traveling to Washington, D.C.
