Found on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, on the corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West, The Dakota building apartments are one of New York’s most posh and exclusive apartment complexes.

The site was designated a New York City Landmark in 1969 and is in the National Register of Historic Places as well as a National Historic Landmark. The building features Victorian-era German Renaissance architecture, complete with a central courtyard that once served as a space for carriages to enter and turn around. All the apartments inside are unique and tailored to the specific needs of each occupant.

The Dakota is best known as the home of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Mark David Chapman shot John Lennon on December 8th, 1980, as he entered the building. Across the street from the entrance of The Dakota, in Central Park, is a 2.5-acre memorial to John Lennon, known as the Strawberry Fields Memorial. Visitors may pay tribute to John Lennon at the black and white tile memorial in the center of the area or visit the Strawberry Fields Garden of Peace.

Famous residents of the Dakota Building, where Yoko Ono still maintains apartments, include (and have included) Lauren Bacall, Rosemary Clooney, Boris Karloff, John Madden, Gilda Radner, Joe Namath, Jack Palance, Rex Reed, Connie Chung, and Judy Garland. Unfortunately, people are not permitted to enter the building; however, visitors can tour the outside and the memorial located across the street. Both make for a great photo opportunity.
